A single year above 1.5C does not mean the world has passed that particular warming level.

Due to year to year variability driven by El Niño and La Niña events, we’d expect to see single years above 1.5C up to a decade before long-term human-driven warming passes that level.

The world needs to reduce its CO₂ emissions quickly.

So taking nuclear plants offline while continuing to burn lots of coal is a terrible decision.

Not only for the climate, but human health too.

@washingtonpost Germany has added lots of renewables (fantastic).

And reduced its coal use (great).

But it has taken more nuclear offline than coal, meaning it still has one of the dirtiest electricity mixes in Europe.

It's less crazy when you take a longer-term view of it.

The EU used to have a much higher footprint, back when its GDP was much lower (and more comparable to China today).

Mostly because its economies were run on coal.

Pretty crazy that even after adjusting for trade China has per-capita CO2 emissions on par with the EU despite having a per-capita GDP that is less than half of Europe's.

The carbon intensity (CO2 per $) in the EU also used to be much higher.

This would remain true, even after adjusting for trade.
